Spend a summer in America. Come back with skills for life.

I’ve spent five summers in the US selling educational books door to door with Southwestern Advantage, and today I lead a sales organisation. If you’re a student who wants to grow faster than a lecture hall allows, let’s talk.

The summer

What the summer actually is.

Southwestern Advantage is a programme with more than 160 years of history: every summer, university students travel to the US and sell educational books door to door — entirely on their own, with no fixed salary: what they earn depends on how much they sell.

Five summers in America have given me more than any other experience: the resilience that only comes when your comfort zone is thousands of kilometres away, and sales skills built on real objections from real people.

Southwestern Advantage — mission

“To help young people develop the skills and character to achieve their goals in life.”

Your questions

Before you decide.

What will I actually learn?

Sales from start to finish: approaching a stranger, presenting, handling objections and closing. Alongside that come the skills nobody teaches in a lecture hall — self-discipline, managing your own time and money, and staying positive after a hundred no’s.

Who does well here?

Students who want to grow, are ready to work hard and are open to feedback. Your field of study matters far less than your attitude. What counts is that you keep going on the days when it’s hard.

How will you support me?

Before the summer we prepare together as a team: training, practice and setting goals. During the summer you can count on me. I’ve been through five summers myself, I know what the hard days feel like, and I’ve led teams of up to 30 people through them.

How do I earn?

There is no fixed salary. Everything depends on your own work ethic, and what you earn depends on how much you sell. If you work hard but sales don’t go well, there is a guaranteed payment of $696 every two weeks, which comes to $4,176 over six two-week periods. In 2025, first-year students made an average gross profit of $7,127 (before expenses). Results vary a lot from person to person. Southwestern’s earnings disclosure →

Also asked

Do I have to buy the books myself?

No. You don’t pay for the books upfront: the customer’s deposit covers the cost of the books, and unsold books in good condition can be returned.

Is this a pyramid scheme?

Definitely not. You sell a real product, educational books, to real customers. There is no fee to join. Southwestern works with the US Embassy and with universities, and pyramid schemes are illegal in both Europe and the United States.

What others say

When Jan walks into a room, it is immediately clear that here is someone with a strong presence and a natural influence on the people around him. His energy and positive attitude create an environment where it is easy to follow his lead and stay motivated.

Jan reminds me of the principle “the devil is in the details”. He digs into the details but never loses sight of the big picture. His strength lies in consistency and faith in the process — he knows that long-term results come from taking the right steps.

Otto Jürgens

Jan is a leader who stands out for his directness, his care for people and his solution-focused mindset. He doesn’t avoid problems — he looks them straight in the eye and helps find a clear way forward.

I greatly value his care and his sincere belief in people. It is clear that Jan doesn’t do this work just for the results, but out of a genuine wish to help and give back. Thanks to him, I am stronger and more confident — both at work and as a person.
